The last addition to our news articles on the Academy Juniors website was all about anticipation for the annual Bolton Active Sports Awards, for which Academy Juniors have regularly found themselves nominated for in numerous categories over the past few years.

We talked in our post about how AJs were up for three awards at this year’s event, and how we anticipated the build up to each one.  We can tell you now that we did not anticipate what a truly exciting night it would turn out to be, and what additions we would pick up in the process!

First up, commiserations would be the wrong word to use in reference to our former coach, Emma, who missed out on the award of Coach of the Year at the 1000-strong attended bash at the Macron Stadium on Friday.  Competition was tough, as always in such a popular category, and so we know that Emma will be delighted with the achievement of being nominated in such a strong field.

Secondly, although our former Under 14s team have recently left Academy Juniors as their coach takes on a brand new challenge elsewhere, it was fantastic to see the girls on the night looking smart, full of smiles, and representing themselves in the most ladylike of lights.  They too missed out on scooping the award they were shortlisted for in Junior Team Achievement of the Year, but the award sponsors were clear to give the girls an honourable mention for their efforts, and even invited them up on stage to collect passes for a free game of bowling at Hollywood Bowl as a ‘well done’ for all their achievements.  Although we’ll miss having the girls and their families as additions at AJs three times a week this season, they will always be part of our football family and part of the AJs #GreenArmy.  Well done girls, you did yourselves proud, and it was lovely to see you and catch up on the night.

And finally, Club Founder, Steven Watson, also missed out on scooping the award for his nomination as Unsung Hero in Sport; the category he was shortlisted for after having spent 10 years dedicating time and energy to building girls’ football in Bolton through the set-up of Academy Juniors.  However, this won’t have mattered to him that much in the grand scheme of things, as during the ceremony itself, his wife and fellow committee member, Jo, started experiencing a strange feeling…  within hours, it was confirmed that Jo had indeed gone into labour (at the event!), and by 12.05pm the following day, Steven and Jo were awarded with the most precious prize imaginable – a beautiful baby daughter.

Welcome, Lily Watson, to the AJs family.  And yes, we know what you’re all thinking… Steven is already trying to figure out if she’s left or right footed…  As the photo suggests, however, Lily will focus for now purely on playing for Team Watson.

Well done to all of the nominees and winners on the night at Bolton Active Sports Awards, and well done to Bolton Council on another successful year of supporting and championing sport for all in our local community!
